BOTOX or DYSPORT? Is One Really Better Than the Other?

Finding the Best Choice, for Anti-Aging

1. The Formulation and Ingredients

(AKA the SCIENCE 🧪)

All cosmetic Botox-type neuromodulator injectables contain a purified strain of botulinum, which relaxes muscles for weeks to several months after injection. These injectables smooth the skin by preventing facial wrinkles and fine lines from forming with your muscle movements.

At Idaho Skin Center, we offer the Top 2 injectables in Dermatology; Dysport and Botox.  Botox and Dysport contain accessory proteins (they’re formulated in the same way), while others are Not —a key feature, for efficacy that sets these two apart from other formulas. The importance of these stabilizing ingredients is that the proteins in Dysport and Botox result in longer lasting results vs. others on the market. Additionally, Dysport has been proven to be even longer lasting*

*Clinical Studies: Michaels et al. and Lowe et al. reported superior effects of Dysport compared to Botox.

Brands of Neuromodulators

  • Botox

  • Dysport

  • Jeuveau

  • Xeomin

2. Unit Measurements Needed for Treatment

Doctors in Dermatology are trained in the differences in “units” of each product. Each expert Doctor or PA, in Cosmetic Dermatology, may use different units, to achieve a customized result.

3. How Quickly Results Develop

With any Botox-type injectable, full results typically are visible around 2 weeks, but the time it takes to begin seeing results may vary based on the formula used. Here is the average time it takes to see detectable results, per neurotoxin:

  • Dysport: 2-3 days

  • Botox: 4-7 days

4. How Long Results Last

Dysport typically lasts longer than Botox; some patients have seen results last up to 5-6 months, although most patients are still ready for a treatment after 3-4 months when results are fading. Botox smoothes fine lines and wrinkles for 2-3 months on average.

You won’t notice a difference in how Botox or Dysport “Look”—but Dysport typically lasts longer for most patients.

5. FDA Approvals

FDA approval means that the specific formula underwent rigorous clinical trials that showed its safety and efficacy when used in the area where it is specifically labeled for use.

  • Dysport: FDA-approved

  • Botox: FDA-approved

6. Personal Preference

If you talk with your friend or neighbor, they may tell you that they swear that the “look” of Dysport or Botox is different and vice versa. Just as some may prefer Motrin to Advil (both are ibuprofen).

Many patients feel that Botox is the “name” they recognize. Similarly, Europeans typically swear by Dysport. However, it really comes down to the actual science. Both Dysport and Botox are formulated with accessory proteins, as discussed above. Other formulas are often substituted for brand Dysport and Botox, but are not the same.

Be aware that if you don’t ask your doctor; you may not be receiving Brand Dysport or Botox, but a cheaper substitute. Other injectables are not formulated in the same way. Brand Dysport and Botox have been studied the longest, and proven safe & effective.
